What is the Android Market Place, Now Known as Google Play?

Android smartphones and tablets have plenty of apps, games, movies and books for them. Some are free and some you’ll need to purchase. There are two places you can go to download these apps, Google Play and Amazon.

Amazon is definitely a great sight to find a lot of things, but when it comes to Android apps and games, Google Play is the premier site to go to. You’ll be able to find a wide assortment of applications for your Android device and some are even free. Let’s take a closer look at Google Play.

Google Play History

When Google purchased Android Inc. the creators of the Android OS, a revolution in mobile computing devices began. An alliance between companies in the mobile industry was created called the Open Handset Alliance. This alliance ensured that the Android OS would be accepted as the operating system of choice for mobile devices.

Google Play

The Google dream turned into a reality and now Android OS has become the most popular OS for mobiles today. A good number of mobile device manufacturers have chosen the Android OS for their devices and now Androids can be seen in every corner of the world.

The popularity of Android devices brought about the massive development of Android applications and games. Software developers and even non-software developers around the world started to develop apps and games for these Android devices. Google now needed a place for these apps and games to be sold or given away for free.

This place was initially called the Android market. However, Google decided to merge Google Music with Android Market and thus rebranded the site as Google Play. When Google Play came out in 2009, only 2,300 apps were available. Now there are over 500,000 apps available at Google Play.

Google Play has been extremely successful. In fact, there has been a recorded 15 billion downloads from the site.

What can you find on Google Play?

When Google Play first came out, apps, games and music were mostly available. However, as technology developed and mobile devices became more sophisticated, movies and books were also added. Now you can also find HD movies that you can play and watch on your mobile device or on an HD TV if the device can be connected to such a unit.

The cost of popularity

Because of Google Play’s popularity, developers around the world became interested in developing apps for Androids to market on this site. Unfortunately, there really hasn’t been any control on what developers can develop and sell or give away for free. As a result, hundreds and thousands of apps became available.

Android Apps

Not all of the apps that you can find on Google Play are really worth having. Some Android tablet apps are totally useless while others have the same function as many other apps. Nevertheless, there are apps that are definitely worth buying or downloading for free.

Google Play keeps track of the popular downloads and displays them on the main page of the site. This is the best way to find the apps that are worth your money. It would be a total waste of time to go through all of the apps available on Google Play, so just take a quick look at the popular Android apps, read the reviews, and make your decision if the app will be useful.

As Androids become even more popular, we can be sure that the number of apps, games, movies, and books available at Google Play will quickly increase. Fortunately, for us, it’s easy to find the popular downloads. Unfortunately for developers, it can be difficult for their creations to become seen.
